dot Don't go to bed with a full stomach. Eat meals at least two to three hours before lying down -- this will give food time to digest and empty from your stomach, and acid levels a chance to decrease before putting your body in a position where heartburn is more likely to occur.
dot Don't overeat. Decrease the size of portions at meal times, or try eating four to five small meals instead of three large ones.
dot Chewing food slowly and completely. Take time to eat -- don't rush. Try putting your fork down between bites.
dot Wear looser-fitting clothes.
dot Avoid heartburn triggers. Stay away from foods and beverages that trigger your heartburn symptoms (for example, onions, peppermint, chocolate, caffeine-containing beverages such as coffee, citrus fruits or juices, tomatoes, or high-fat foods). A good way to figure out what foods cause your symptoms is to keep a heartburn diary.
dot Shed some pounds. If you are overweight, losing weight can help relieve your symptoms.
dot Stop smoking. Nicotine, one of the main active ingredients in cigarettes, can weaken the lower esophageal sphincter, the muscle that controls the opening between the esophagus and stomach, preventing the acid-containing contents of the stomach from entering the esophagus.
dot Avoid alcohol. If your aim is to unwind after a stressful day, try exercise, walking, meditation, stretching, or deep breathing instead of drinking alcohol.
dot Keep a diary or heartburn log. Keep track of when heartburn hits and the specific activities that seem to trigger the incidents.
dot Minimizing stress.
dot Don't think about any problems while having the meals, Concentrate on the food
dot Avoid talking or laughing while having meals
dot Mental and physical rest is necessary for the patient especially if he/she suffers from the acute form of indigestion.

Here is a list of foods that are good for GERD patients.

dot Drink plenty of pure water. Water acts as a universal neutralizer. Drinking coconut water three times a day is also helpful. You may also drink it empty stomach in the morning. Banana is a soothing fruit.
dot Fruits like apples and bananas which are non-acidic are good for GERD patients.
dot

Vegetables including carrots, beans, baked potatoes, cabbage and broccoli are all known to be safe GERD diet foods.

dot Fish is a great option too, and should be included in your GERD diet.
dot It is said that if raw garlic cloves are swallowed with water in morning, empty stomach, it would completely cure all problems of acidity.
The following are a few pointers on what foods are excluded in a GERD diet.

dot Fried foods, especially deep fried foods are a definite no-no.
dot Unfortunately, chocolate and mint are also amongst the foods that trigger reflux, so they have to be given up.
dot

Coffee and tea aggravate GERD in most people. Experiment and find out if you are amongst the lucky few who can tolerate either.

dot Certain fruits and their juices in particular, such as lemons and lemonade, grapefruit, orange and cranberry need to be renounced.
dot Acid-like foods pose a problem, such as tomato and tomato juice and raw onions. Certain preparations of potatoes, like fries and mashed potatoes need to be avoided.
dot Dairy products such as cheese are known to cause problems for most GERD patients.
dot Liquor and wines are likely to cause reflux, so exercise caution while consuming them.

  Exercise:   Top |
Pilates for heartburn and acid reflux.
Pilates exercises strengthen and improve flexibility of all your muscles groups including diaphragm and abdominal muscles. These muscles help your breathing and digestion and toning them should help heartburn symptoms.

dot Lie on your back with your legs bent and feet face-down on the floor so that you are in the preparatory position.
dot Lift your legs, one leg at a time, such that both legs are bent at the knees bent at a 90 degree angle. Ensure that your pelvis and ribcage and anchored on the floor. Breath calmly and place your hands by your sides.
dot While breathing out, extend a leg away from you. Maintain optimal low-back stability.
dot While breathing in, return your leg to previous position. Keep your shoulders down and your stomach in.

Aerobic exercise stimulates muscular contractions in the digestive disorder

dot Aerobic exercise with Morning Walker consumes negligible oxygen, thus eliminates or reduces the presence of ulcer inducing or carcinogenic substances.
dot This method of aerobic exercise recovers the normal digestive function, to treat and prevent digestive ulcers.

Things to remember and do before exercise:
A jarring type of exercise, such as jogging, can increase your chances of suffering from acid reflux. Less jarring exercises, such as riding a cycle or walking, will produce few acid reflux symptoms.
