dot This includes getting enough rest and proper nutrition so you have enough energy to take care of your baby and avoid illness.
dot Some women think that when they are sick, they should not breastfeed. But, most common illnesses, such as cold, flu or diarrhea, can't be passed through breast milk.
dot In fact, if a mother is sick, her breast milk will have antibodies in it. These antibodies will help protect her baby from getting the same sickness.
dot Nursing mothers should not smoke or take drugs. Tobacco from cigarettes contains a drug called nicotine, which transfers to breast milk and may even affect the amount of milk you produce.
dot The effects of alcohol on the breastfeeding baby are directly related to the amount of alcohol a mother consumes. Moderate to heavy drinking (2 or more alcoholic drinks per day) can interfere with the let-down reflex and the milk-ejection reflex. It also can harm the baby's motor development and cause slow weight gain.
dot Reduce mental stress.
dot Some of these drugs that should never be taken while breastfeeding include:

dot Bromocriptine (Parlodel) - a drug for Parkinson's disease, it also decreases a woman's milk supply.
dot Cyclophosphamide, Doxorubicin, and most chemotherapy drugs for cancer - these drugs kill cells in the mother's body and may harm the baby.
dot Ergotamine (for migraine headaches); Methotrexate (for arthritis); and Cyclosporine (for severe arthritis and psoriasis, aplastic anemia, Crohn's disease, kidney disease, and for after organ transplant surgery).

  Diet:   Top |
Since every mother and child is different, there is no specific diet that you must follow. However, there are certain things that you must be aware of.

dot Fruits and vegetables must be eaten and protein should also be part of your diet.
dot Slightly increase your calories. Aim to get 300-500 extra calories per day.
dot Up your intake of pure water. To keep from becoming dehydrated (which can lead to a decrease in milk production), during breastfeeding, you must drink ten glasses of liquid, water preferably.
dot Limit caffeine and alcohol. They can be passed on to your baby through your milk.

  Watch your vitamins:

dot Vitamin C: Since much of what you take in passes right back out through your breast milk, you need to get 120 mg (vs. the usual 85 mg) per day. Good sources: oranges, broccoli, strawberries, tomato soup.
dot Vitamin A: You lose a lot of this through breastfeeding as well, so aim for 1300 micrograms per day (vs. the usual 700 micrograms). Some examples: spinach, carrots, pumpkin, sweet potatoes, and kale.
dot Omega-3s: Your baby’s brain needs DHA, a key omega-3 fatty acid found in fish and fish oil supplements, to develop properly. Since your milk is your baby’s only source of nutrients (at least during the first few months), you’ll want to get at least 200 mg per day.

  Exercise:   Top |

dot Study suggests that mothers who exercise generally have a greater milk supply than those who do not exercise.
dot New moms’ breastfeeding their babies may require more aerobic and resistance exercise.
dot During lactation, women transfer around 200 milligrams of calcium per day from their own stores to their breast milk.
dot Weight-bearing exercise would minimize bone losses during lactation and decrease the risk of osteoporosis later in life," Lovelady said.
dot Exercise - especially strength training - can slow bone loss during lactation, the study found.
